Unit 3 Reflection
Originally I had planned to do a podcast, but due to scheduling conflicts with my guest, I had to scrap that idea, and find something new. So, for my Unit 3 project, I made a chatbot. I thought it would be a fun and interactive way to present my topic instead of writing another essay. Since my focus was on how tech and social media affect the way we act, think, and talk, it made sense to use something that people actually interact with in real life. A chatbot gave people a chance to explore those ideas in a more hands-on way.
My audience was mostly classmates. I thought about how many of them already use AI tools like ChatGPT. Instead of reading a long blog post, they could just ask the bot questions and get quick, helpful responses. It made the experience feel more natural and personal, just like a real conversation.
I posted the chatbot to my blog and added a short message at the top to explain what it was. I told readers the chatbot would guide them through a conversation about social media, its benefits, and its downsides. The bot’s answers were based on the ideas I wrote about in earlier assignments. I didn’t get any direct responses from people outside class, but even just interacting with the bot counts as engagement in my view. Ideally, I’d like it to be used by students or teachers to help start conversations about tech and social media. That would be the best outcome, getting people to think more deeply about the topic after using it.
One classmate gave me a helpful comment on an earlier blog post that pointed out some formatting issues I hadn’t noticed. They said: “I definitely agree with you on how social media affects our daily lives in terms of our behavior and language. Overall, I think your analysis is great, but you might want to edit some of your formatting. The first half of your 1st source has a different font and background color than the rest of your post. Also, if you want to stay consistent try having either links or just the titles. For example, your 1st and 3rd sources have links, but the 2nd source has the title with no link. Lastly, I wasn't able to comment anonymously, you might need to edit that in your settings for later on.”
This comment helped a lot. On my screen, the formatting looked fine, so I didn’t realize part of the post had weird highlights or different fonts. I fixed that right away. I also cleaned up the way I listed my sources so they were all formatted the same way. I couldn’t link The Social Network because it’s a movie, but I fixed the others. I also updated the blog settings so people could comment anonymously, which I didn’t know was a thing until my classmate pointed it out.
This was my favorite project from the class because I got to do something different. I’ve spent the semester writing about how technology affects our lives, so it was cool to make something that actually showed that in action. The chatbot wasn’t just part of the argument, it was the argument. I also learned how important format and audience are. Picking the right way to share your message really helps people connect with it. And even though this started as a class assignment, it ended up being something I’d actually share with others outside of school.
I honestly enjoyed all of you Unit 3 blog posts, I like the way you think and the connections you were able to make between the creative aspects of your project and our inquiry. Just by reading all of your post one thing you have in common is the creative aspects between them all. For example, your post on the graphic novel you read “Persepolis” uses the aspects of images to convey emotion on the deep topics of war and loss. This post flows very smoothly through its entirety, it gives context on the book but also how technology plays a role. For your Portfolio post, I think it's super cool you created a chatbox even as a back-up plan to doing an actual podcast. Its a very out of the box idea, and a nice interactive aspect to also get your audience involved and engaged. - Amarise
